Alanís Own Personal Fleet
The beautiful ship 'Strathspey'.
And the equally stylish 'Hauraki'.
And here's the giveaway ... check out those HUGE Swans on the lake!
They're Alan's 5-foot long, fully radio-controlled models and their designs and names are his own. They're composites of design features from a number of existing vessels and as such, are unique.
I'd love it if they still built ships like this but, at about 25,000 tons life-sized, I doubt there'd be any interest in the now mega-ship market! They're entirely scratch-built, though I did get an outside firm to cast the fibreglass hulls from my wooden mock ups. They are a good conversation piece when they go out, usually on the River Stour, near Christchurch, Dorset, or else (as in these pictures) on a large lake in Poole Park.
Astounding work Alan ... what a great relaxing hobby that would be, sailing them that is, I'm not sure I'd have the time, skill or patience to build one :-)
Update - 20th August 2015
Strathspey and Hauraki were both withdrawn from service and were sold to new owners last year, Strathspey at 13 years old and Hauraki at 10. Below are pictures of my latest creation, Lindisfarne, (second of the name), which was completed in June 2015.
"Lindi" is a much more "retro" design than her recent predecessors,
with far more curves, flare and rake and is the only one of my ships
actually to have genuine sheer, at least, up forward. She has been
completed in Orient Line livery, as I can't stand the latest P&O
There are also some video clips on You Tube, showing her static on the bench, on trials and on her maiden voyage and these may be found at:
