Alan’s
Own Personal Fleet
The
beautiful ship 'Strathspey'
And
the equally stylish 'Hauraki'
And
here's the giveaway ... check out those HUGE Swans on the lake!
They're
Alan's 5-foot long, fully radio-controlled models and their designs and
names are his own. They're composites of design features from a number of
existing vessels and as such, are unique.
Alan
recalls;
'I'd
love it if they still built ships like this but, at about 25,000 tons
life-sized, I doubt there'd be any interest in the now mega-ship market!
They're entirely scratch-built, though I did get an outside firm to cast
the fibreglass hulls from my wooden mock ups. They are a good conversation
piece when they go out, usually on the River Stour, near Christchurch,
Dorset, or else (as in these pictures) on a large lake in Poole
Park.'
Astounding
work Alan ... what a great relaxing hobby that would be, sailing them that
is, I'm not sure I'd have the time, skill or patience to build one :)
