David Saunders' Memories

December 1969
A large scale promotion was set up by the Cinerama network of cinemas to launch their new film Krakatoa – East of Java. As a company we were just as keen to gain as much publicity as we could so we joined forces with Cinerama International. When it was learnt that for the Premiere which was shown at the Astoria, Charing Cross Road, a nautical flavour was desired, we immediately considered the idea of having uniformed officers in attendance. Ideas grew from this and as a result a gangway was erected from the street into the main foyer; all the VIPs entering the cinema would have to “come aboard” by means of the gangway. Chusan was due to arrive in Southampton at noon on the day of the Premiere and was, in fact, the only ship in port at that time. So, with the help of the Fleet Personnel Department the vessel was contacted and asked if there would be any volunteers willing to come to London in uniform for the occasion. We were surprised at the keenness expressed by those aboard and as a result ten officers were detailed for duty. It was agreed that David Saunders, Junior Assistant Purser, would act as the liaison Officer aboard and the ten Officers left Chusan at 2.30 in the afternoon being met by Brian Redsell at the West End Office at 5.30. There they changed into very smart white uniforms before moving on to the Astoria. At the Astoria the Officers were entertained by senior personnel from Cinerama International before the doors were opened and the audience began to arrive. The ship’s company then lined both sides of the gangway and created the nautical effect that was desired. Needless to say, celebrations followed after the performance, the party arriving back aboard Chusan at 3 the next morning.

On the far right is the Second Steward, supervising the party. In the background on the left is the Surgeon Ross Wheatley. The three blonde girls were a singing group travelling as guest entertainers. The fourth girl was their manager.

Ross Wheatley was a very interesting person. He came to sea after a career in the Army where he obtained the rank of Major General. I believe this is/was the highest rank a doctor could obtain and that he was number two in the whole British Army Medical Corps when he retired. His ‘Who’s Who?’ entry showed he had been Queen’s Household for a couple of years in the 1960s. A gentleman.

1972 Model, Chef Gordon Mincham at left and Chief Baker Joe Bissig at right. The margarine model was made for the Australian Museum Society’s Ball to commemorate the opening, in 1852, of the first regular mail steamship service to Australia by the original Chusan. The framework of the model was made by the ship’s carpenters before Gordon and Joe went to work. The photo was taken in the Chef’s cabin a couple of days before the model was delivered ashore. (Information taken from staff newspaper ‘Wavelength’).

1973 Deidre Barnard

On one of our South African cruises to South America we had the famous heart surgeon Dr Christian Barnard travel as a passenger with his daughter and (second) wife. Although he was on holiday Dr Barnard gave a talk to the passengers one afternoon on heart transplants – very interesting and pitched so that a non-medical person could understand it. The photo shows his daughter, Deidre, with me giving out leis outside the restaurant on Island Night.

Oriana in Pago Pago was taken by the ship’s photographers in about 1980/81.

The photos in the Panama Canal were taken homeward bound in either April 1980 or April 1981 by one of the ship’s photographer who travelled overland. The photographers then produced a series of 10”x8” prints as souvenirs. I assume there are no copyright problems with these?

Passengers were disembarked at both ports and accommodated in hotels. To assist in organising this two agents from Mackinnon Mackenzie, Hong Kong, joined the ship in Fremantle. The Settlers

John Fyffe, Cindy Kent, Geoff Srodzinski, and Mike Jones (Deceased)

In 1969 and 1970 the folk group, The Settlers, did a series of UK cruises on ss Oriana and Chusan as guest entertainers. I sailed with them on Chusan. They had some photos taken while on Oriana and this photo, on the aft deck of Oriana, taken by the ship’s photographers and used ‘by kind permission of P&O’, appeared as the cover of their 1970 LP “Settlers Alive”. After their first cruise Geoff had a P&O baggage sticker “S” fixed to the front of his double bass underneath the strings. During subsequent TV performances there was always at least one close-up of his right hand plucking the strings and P&O got a free advert! I believe he got engaged to/married a (Dutch?) WAP. Those who sailed with the group may be interested to learn that two or three years ago I saw that Cindy was ordained as minister of religion.
