Don Askewís Memories

Don writes;

My name is Don Askew and I hail from Barrow-in-Furness where I served my apprenticeship as a Fitter and Turner in Vickers Armstrong where all the "O" Boats along with Himalaya and Chusan were built. I joined P&O in '65 and was on the Sunda for 8 months before joining Oronsay from '66 to '69. I met my wife Peggy in '67 when she was a passenger on Oronsay doing part of our world cruise. On that trip Oronsay caught fire when we were a day out of Hong Kong coming from Japan. Peggy had the misfortune of losing all her belongings due to the fire when the sprinklers went off on E Deck Aft. On the same trip we were a day out of Bombay heading for Aden when the Six Day War started closing the Suez Canal. We were then rerouted around South Africa up to Senegal then home. In '68 Peggy joined Oronsay as a Children's Hostess and sailed with us until '69. Peggy being Canadian I emigrated to Vancouver in '69.

All photos and narration courtesy of Don Askew. My comments are in gold. The photos were a bit faded with age but Iíve tried to resurrect them to the best of my ability.

Rod Kelly, Don Askew and K.C. Field entertaining three Canadian ladies who lost everything in the Oronsay fire. The so called Act of God had nothing to do with the Aft A/C unit steam joint blowing on the hold bulkhead. Let's face it 500psi of super heated steam wouldn't cause plastic goods from Japan to ignite would they? When the sprinklers went off in E Deck cabins the water boiled leaving the ladies with just what they were wearing.
