Archie
Anderson thought the last remaining unnamed person in the above group
(between TT & Les) was Roddy McConnell but that’s been challenged by
Marty Elliot who claims that Roddy was and still is in the 20 stone
bracket!
The
best shot he can see of Roddy is Oriana Engineers 1978
just above John Thow, you will see the difference in size.
We
have to name this guy … I’m sure I’ll know it when I hear it.
Finally,
thanks to Andy Ball, we have the name of the unnamed guy ... and I knew
I'd know it when I heard it ... Pete Woods!
That's
Bob in the middle obviously and definitely The Colonel (John Kling)
standing on the far right. The chick looks like Jo Slatter (BBJ) but I
can't name the others.

I
know this says Monkey Bar but Bob send them at the same time as the
others. I'd forgotten about these little cards so you're drink wasn't
cleared away while you were indisposed, brilliant!

Mark
sent this and the next 2 photos. I’m disappointed not to be in this shot
as I was definitely onboard but I must have been on the 8-12 with Mike
Jack, Dirty Harry & Toby Tompkins.

Scottish Hairdresser (thanks to Kevin for naming Ross), Kevin
Timms, Geordie John, Andy

(thanks to Don Cole for naming Andy). Andy ball has in turn named Santa as
Deck Cadet Nigel Cook (aka Tiny).
There’s
only one person I can 100% identify and that’s Geordie John Atkinson
smack in the middle next to the guy pouring the slime who may be Super
Mac.
Dave
Whitehand recalls; ‘If you look carefully I think you’ll see that blue
helmet right side is Mark Sawyer. Left hand side blue helmet I think is
Arnie. The person on the table is of course Mr Oakes. How do I know? Well
Dave only had 1 pair of trunks and he didn’t want to get them dirty so
he put mine on. Of course the fact that I now had a pair of dirty shorts
was never considered. In fact I think at the time I thought it was a good
idea.’
Unfortunately
I have to own up to be the one caught in drag in the above shot. Please
don’t ask. Behind me in agony is Paul
Robinson (Blue) then Nice John from
Windsor, John Hammond and Geoff
Heap (Groucho) with his leg around Geordie
John Atkinson.

That’s
TT on the far right with me
on the far left. Garry
Stewart (aka Aussie Jock) is next to me and John
Speed (aka Speedy) is next to TT. That was one of those very rare
occasions where, after a hard sweaty day down the Engine Room, we actually
found time between drinking beer to get showered and dressed and make it
on decks in time for Dinner.
"Seeing
the photo of David Stott (Stottie as we called him) reminded me of how I
was always trying to persuade him to whirl me round the dance floor in a
quickstep. The girls used to line up! He was a fantastic dancer and I
believe had been professionally trained. Unfortunately, I had not and trod
on his feet a lot! He took it all in good part."

I’m sure the gun Matt Gibbs is holding was mine. I bought it in
Vancouver and it was a replica Colt 45 Frontier model. It fired .22 air
pellets. I could never land it and I left it in the bond locker.

This looks like the guy we called Kangas. He was an Australian like me but
he had the broadest accent. He came from Yarrawonga and all you Poms had a
great time ragging him. He used to say things like “Jingies”, that and
his “Yarrawonga” had the boys rolling around laughing.
These
photos were taken during UK cruising and, as you know, was a very quiet
time for us so the group was formed called 'The Team'. We had dinner
parties in our cabins and pourouts every night in one place or the
another.

We
made electric cookers using a biscuit tins, red ring and a simmer stat,
very effective too. Greg Sinclair believes the gentleman with the
beard in this and the photo below is Norm Geehan. Maybe you could confirm
or deny that Norm.
We
caught fish when in port and made dinner for as many people you see in the
photos.

Above

other two well known faces were Engine Room Crew and I’m ashamed to say
I’ve forgotten their names but they were both great guys.

And
finally Dave Oakes is seen here being carried into the Engine Room ably
supported by Mike Jack (left), me (middle) and Dirty Harry who was still
singing his head off. The same Crew guys are in the background.
As
Bill's sitting on the wall on the far left there then I think I must have
been the photographer with Bill's camera for this one because I was
definitely there as I have the exact same footage on Super 8 movie film.

Now
this brilliant photo was sent to me by Dave Jewkes but it was originally
sent to him by Charlie Hill, now Chief Technical Officer on the mv Oceana,
with a very interesting challenge;
"Just
a small memento of Christmas past in the 'Ocean Bar' - The first one to
email me with all the correct names of the ten officers in this treasured
picture will win one case of Carlsberg. I think my £18.50 is pretty safe
- or maybe not."
Unfortunately,
I've only managed 1 name and that's John Russell (aka Nice John from
Windsor) who's slouching with his leg over the chair arm in the very front
left. Normally Nice John used to get his leg over with much prettier
things ... who can ever forget Cherokee?
So
I've started the ball rolling so let's see who can claim that prize from
Charlie :)
Martin
Chopper Harris has taken up the challenge with the names below;
L-R:
John
Russell, Charlie Hill, Colin Davis, Alan Patterson, Jerry
Stangroom (Skippy), MalcolmOrr Owen,
Graham Kirk (Frickley),
DavePreiss
Preece, Roy Stathem, Ned Kelly, and the two
guys at the back are photographers ...
I
think you need to start working out how you're going to deliver the case
of Carlsberg Charlie! Good effort Martin 9/10.
Charlie
Hill (through Dave Jewkes) has kindly added the above info in pink
with no mention of the beer Chopper, and writes;
As for the famous Christmas in the Ocean bar. Why famous - well it was the
only time during Bob Sanderson's time as S2/E on Oriana, that the
day workers were given an afternoon off and that was Christmas day 1973. We
seem now to have all of the names. The two chaps standing at the back are
ship's photogs and the three men sitting not in uniform are Australian
passengers.
Mark
Sawyer tells me that this photo was taken at the end of Deep Sea 74/75
literally the line Voyage cruise from Oz before we joined the Big O in May
for the two week refit in Southampton Docks. Mark has added the names in Gold

Aneurin Griffith
adds;
The two next to Charlie Oxley were both, I think, called Malcolm (not certain on this). After Chopper Harris is an unknown, then Derek, and Pat Foss-Smith. I also have a pic which goes with this one, of three of us not able to be there (on watch or pissed or both), so the photographer took it separately that afternoon, shows Dave Preece, Dave George and myself. I'll scan and send it later.

Funnily enough
it was the pictures with you and the red garter hats in the engine room
that started me remembering and this photo confirmed I wasn't a million
miles out!
We were all on
the 12-4 on the line voyage (I remember because we couldn't go to
Disneyland in LA a bit later on), we went off in Bermuda because Ian
insisted he knew where we could get Watneys Red Barrel. I don't think he
did as we walked around for miles looking but we eventually did get some,
and the pint glass is in your hand Steve to prove it!
Above
is a shot of the 'Two Icons' ... Garry Stewart and the Opera House !!!
The shots on Sydney Harbour were our first trip, arriving on the outward bound from
UK, Garry had dragged me out of my Pit to see this (what you promised to be) the best harbour in the world,
he was right of course!!

The girl was a friend of mine, a Canadian from Vancouver, appropriately named Sheila, who was equally thrilled with the view.

Don't remember whose cabin this was, but I'm sure we enjoyed the 'drinkies'.
