Mark
Barnett and Phil Archer in uniform. Billy Vader and unknown punter in civies in
the front. Steve Kumm (aka Photo Steve) in the jacket at the back.
According to
Richard this picture was used to demonstrate bandage dressing in the
tropics ... check out the guy next to the gorgeous Babe in the white
cossie.
This was taken on the Sun in 1981 and starting from top left
and going clockwise, ?? can't remember his name but he was an engine gadget, John Dye
(Purser), Me, The legendary Paddy Clare (deceased) and Dave Bownass.
This
was taken in Glacier Bay. Kevin is the one with the ginger hair with his
arms folded in the back row and he asks the question;
"Is
there anybody out there who remembers this intrepid crew of sailors?"
Colin
Doughty has given it a shot;

Sun Princess 1976, collecting ice in Glacier Bay. On the left is Jerry Glen (3E), just behind him is
David Dene (AP) aka 'Monocle Man', then to the right, with beard, is Nigel Hastings (3E), then myself (AE). No idea about the rest.
Harbo
has kindly provided the following information;
The AP aka
Monocle Man, I can't remember his name at the moment, think it was David something, but when he wore the monocle, he was a dead ringer for Wilfred Hyde White. The chap at the back (orange jacket) is Cliff Perry, Cruise Director and the lovely young lady was a Steiner
lass who's name also escapes me. The guy front right next to Gerry was a Coxswain.
I'll work on the blanks.
Aneurin Griffith,
in discussion with Ally Gruber, think the Monocle Man is Dave Dean, maybe
Harbo can confirm that. Also, Ally says please pass on his best wishes to Harbo when
next I contact him. Consider it done.
This
was taken at the lower lake. Jungle Jim Powell cooking, Bill Witts, Jon Tully, Chris Lawton, me (with Oriana
sweatshirt), Phil Pickford, Phil's wife (I think), Tim and Carol Brown. Jim was just staring his motor time as 8-12 3EO with Bill (4EO) and
Jon (AEO) as his support. Chris (3EO) and I (4EO) were the 4-8 (we had gone up the hill first to get the beer chilling in the lake). I think
Phil was Ch Off and I can't remember if Tim (3O) or Carol (SAP) was signed on. I remember they didn't get to sail together much, or get
leave at similar times, so would travel as spouses during their respective leave periods.
Here is a picture of
myself (left), Mark Jordan (R/O) and an AP called Don going on a scuba diving trip in one of the lifeboats from Sun Princess at Grenada the year was about 1976
The
two guys on the left are Mark Jordon (R/O) and Don ? (AP) and that's Tony
Simpson on the right but he's not sure who the two ladies were. Situation
normal.
This was taken on Sun Princess in 1978 on Alaska Cruising.
See if anyone can name these guys as I was there only for a month on relief before finishing with the sea. All I remember
is I think the Colonel got me roped into this race and I know I came last!!! (Thought I was fit).
It was a lot of fun and the Colonel has this on video. Alaskan cruising was a lot of fun I worked in the disco or night club
but can't remember the name of the bar, see if anyone can remember it. I
think the young bell boy that I knew from Oriana came first.
Harbo
replies;
The disco or nightclub on the old Sun was called
the Starlight. Occasionally they might have a disco in the bar below which was "The Union Jack Bar" hamburger / Pool
Bar. In the photo of the fun run (which I participated in quite a few, wearing a Tutu ) is not too clear, but
I believe it's Paul Brougham on the extreme right in the Mess Jacket. Possibly Zak Coombes 3rd from left, but open to offers.
The fun run was generally through the town and back again, but there was also the Skagway scamper, which was a
race up to the lower lake and back again. Not so much fun :-(
John
Trembling adds;
Second from
the left in the white P&O t shirt and white shorts is Dave Bonnet
(Bon Bon) who is deceased but I don't have any details or dates and I think the girl kneeling down with 11 on her t shirt is possibly Jan Bacon who I think is still at sea.
John
Colonel Kling adds;
Kneeling is Noel Hogan,
I was his best man when he got married to Tinker a casino girl on the Sun, they got married on St
Patrick's Day in Las Vegas in a wedding parlour. I should write a story about that as Noel got really drunk before the wedding
but I digress. Next to Dave Bonnet (Bon Bon) is Brendan Cole who went on to work on P&O
Ferries. Next to Brendan is Colin Doughty who is responsible for me getting married to an
American and leaving the sea. Next to Colin is someone whose name I forget but we were barmen together.
Next to him is John Russell. I have a video of this race on my Facebook
site here.
John
Rennie adds;
Far right is Paul Brougham then me, John
Rennie (aka JR) then 4/E (also ran) then the "Two Starlight Sisters" Barmen from the
Starlight - one holding the sign but I can't remember their names. At the back,
the very tall guy with the beard is Martin Coombes, whose racing pseudonym was "The Racing Rabbi".
