This
is a classic example of the small ships entertainment syndrome. A Silly
Hat Party! You had to be there J. I can only recognise two people and that’s
Don Cole back middle with the beard and Ben Dover smack in the middle with
a plastic cup on his head. What the ???? Dave Jewkes tells me that the guy
in front of Don Cole is David Saunders (aka Diddy David), a Purser. And
directly far right in the cloth cap is Mike Fatchen. And the gorgeous girl
on the left with the chess board on her head is Marie Groom … very nice.
On
the 27th November 2006, I was invited to Lunch on board the Pacific
Princess by Bill McCandless and during the visit we went to the Bridge and
met Captain Mike Fatchen who'd just arrived to take over the ship. There's
a photo of him in the Reunion section here
Thanks
to Debbie McAughtrie (nee Buxton), Bert’s wife ex Uganda Asst Mat and
Entertainments Officer on Oriana & Canberra we have some more names of
the above mob.
Next
to Don Cole in the Aussie cork hat is John Adamson (Engineer). Wearing the
dog kennel, next to Fatch, is Vicky Holmes (Asst Mat). Middle row next to
the guy wearing the chef hat is Nicky Shutt (WAP) and then Anita
Sutherland (WAP) (Alec's wife) 3rd from the left in the front row is Jane
Kilminster (Asst Mat). The Pirate hat in the front row is Freddie Lloyd (R.O.).
In the front row with a drink problem is Kirstine Mayall (Ents) and the
guy delivering the drink is Jimmy Dene (Cruise Director-when he was on
this planet). I think the girl on the back row in the blue T shirt is
Jenny Gardener (Nursing Sister).
The
information continues thanks to Kirstine
Mayall.
Chris
Blake is the Bishop in the middle of the front row. He maybe was First
Officer at the time and most recently I saw him on TV just after 9/11 as
Captain on one of those training sailing ships, maybe the Winston
Churchill or Malcolm Miller. Frank Zaniewski, Doctor, is behind me with
the top hat on and Ron Furlong, who ran everything for the kids on board,
is the one with the black Admiral's hat and white shirt.
The
information again continues thanks to Bob
Eden who tells me that Chris Blake is in fact the Captain of the Bark
Endeavour built in Fremantle and launched in 1994.
The
only two I can name are myself front left and the guy in the middle at the
back who was called Morris Skinner who was a leckey with me, he was a
great character and always laughing and joking, we used to try and compete
with each other all the time from shooting cans to bronzing contests, he
was from Sunderland I think, yet another good guy who I have lost contact
with mores the pity. Maybe someone will know some other names.

Fatchen again who’s skilfully demonstrating to a bemused purser the
P&O sign for "my glass is empty please refill it".

Here’s
Don fully loaded singing along with the two at the bar but unable to stand
to join them.
Don
recalls the reason they where all so pissed was that Ken Hobbs (C/Eng) had
donated a large flagon of the most rough local wine to the party, as the
bar had closed, and they set about making sure Ken got his money back on
the empty flagon as he reckoned it was worth more than the wine. I still
remember hoping that he’d not mixed up the container with the stuff we
used to clean electric motors with as is smelt like it and had the same
effect after we had drank it...Death.

Just
to prove that the effect of the wine was lethal, this is Dave Holmes's
body found the next day :)
The Barclays
Bank girls did the currency exchange on the Uganda (instead of the
Pursers), a hang over from the BI days apparently. Their accommodation was
starboard side just aft of the Engineers accommodation so they were always
great favourites of the Engineers. Seen in the engine room on a tour is
Angie White on the Port Ahead wheel, and I'm afraid I can't remember the
other girl's name.
Uganda Brochure
shots for the 1981 season. They were taken in 1980. That's Richard
Reubin pretending to be dancing with the lady in the red dress. 2 WAPs
and a Purser were also roped in for the "shoot" which took place
on a quiet layover day in port somewhere.
That's
definitely Jose Mackenzie between the
nearest couple on the right. Can anyone name the rest?
Thanks to Sue
Turner (now Sayce) for supplying the following information;
This photo was
taken in Athens dry dock (no pax aboard!) whilst the ship was undergoing
urgent repair work after going aground leaving Alexandria! The two ladies
in the foreground were models. The Purser is Diddy David (David Saunders),
and the lady with her back to the model in the red dress is me, Sue Turner
(WAP), the other WAP next to Diddy David is Jose Mackenzie!!

Richard
believes the Chef is Trevor Friday and Andy Ball thinks the Purser on the
right is David Saunders (aka Diddy David).

Christmas production whilst school cruising. This must have been about
1979 or 1980 and that year it was “Sleeping Beauty”. I can have a go
at naming some of the participants but no doubt someone can help me with
the ones I don’t remember:

“Brown Girl in the Ring” and similar contemporary ditties.

This photo was
taken in 1983 whilst Uganda was a troopship and in the vicinity of

whilst cruising. The members of this group are taking a few light

Don
Cole remembers;
This was an
event I had completely forgotten about. It must have been on my last trip
on Uganda between Sep and Nov 79 the trip we went aground off Alexandria.
Jim
has told me the following people are in the photo but I'm not sure who's
who; Ian Mark, Chris Brown, Jim Lakin, Alan Newby, Dai Thomas, Ken Hobbs,
Roger Marshal, Bob Prowse, Alex Malcolm.
Jim
Brady has identified himself in this shot and adds;
It
was in fact 1975. I’m the one on the right ... sitting on the
switchboard rail ... with the spectacles. I was the J2 and stood the
twenty past 4 to 8. It was, after ten years at sea, a sort of lap of
honour and I was going elsewhere. In any event ... steamships were
becoming rare. By and large the people on your site are the ones that were
joining as juniors as I was leaving. Well done Martin Elliot and my
condolences to Bernie O’Dell’s relatives. He insisted that his name
was Odell ... without the apostrophe. He was one of the good guys.
Geoff
Horan realls;
I
agree with Jim that was from ’75. I am in the top right hand corner just
emerging from the genny room. The Serang, who is in the bottom left was a
real good chap, as were all the crew in the engine room. The most reliable
men I ever sailed with. I recall that when we had a ‘crew curry’ he
used to be invited. He used to sit beaming at everyone, with his can of
Guinness, god knows what he thought of us all, half canned engineers.
A rare photo that in today’s climate of ‘elf & safety would probably not be
permitted. Gasping for air are Mick O’Connor (E Cadet) & Mike Thomas (3EO) in a very precarious position on the top of the funnel of Uganda at twilight and rolling at sea. Actually even more precarious is the position of the photographer (me) but at least I guess I am upwind of the other auxiliary flue gases.
This photo was taken when I was on Uganda for a month as a favour for Ken
Hewitt who would not give me a ticket to Sydney from London to go back to the Arcadia early to join my
fiancé. Debbie Buxton (now McAughtrie) gave me the photo when I went back to Scotland for my brother's wedding some years ago and whilst
I was there I went to see Bert and Debbie. Paul Dilks wrote this story/sketch which we normally did on the Arcadia during officers revue (photos to come).
You can see Dilksie on the mic with Debbie playing my daughter Felicity Fondelmore, me on the ballroom floor playing Colonel Fondelmore and the Chief RO Fred I think playing the villain.
The hero (Hector Havelot) is not in shot and I cannot remember who played him. On the Arc Charlie Hill played the hero and Dougie
Cruikshank the villain. Felicity on the Arc was played, usually by one of the most buxom of the girls.
What makes the photo so unique is that to my knowledge it was only performed this once as it was the only time Paul and I sailed on Uganda together.
Harbo
adds;
Fred the CRO is Freddie Lloyd and sat
on the left of Paul Dilks is Chris Sample (behind music stand).
