John James and myself, with our wives, met up in Sydney after forty years. We were both Electrical officers on Oriana in the mid '60's. We spent a few hours reminiscing as you do, along with some beverage like yesteryear. John, myself and the late Bob Jenkins lived together in Northmead before we were all married taking turn to be each other's best man and then we went our separate ways. John and Bob ended up living near each other in Umina.

Ken was in Fife meeting up with family and I was working some 8 miles from him we met up for a meal. As you can imagine trying to pick up on 35 years of absence is almost impossible but we had a good attempt! It was good to recognise he had not lost any of his humour and it reminded me of the times we would have a drink on decks. I was eager to hear about other old friends and colleagues who settled in Sydney i.e. Kevin O’Connor, TT, Blue to name a few and naturally the conversation included those who were no longer with us, like Wicksy, and Dick Stone. I also heard first hand what a marvellous reunion was had in Perth and South Africa, both attended by Ken. It fired me to consider that perhaps I should (well we, Fi & I,) go out to Oz and NZ not only to tour but to see a few old faces, 2013 sounds a good date for me.
I've just lit a candle in my front room for you Glyn, to guide you to the door, and the spare king bed's made :)

The day started with us all meeting up at the palatial Sawyer residence overlooking the Canning River (behind me, should've got a photo of that).
Then, on an absolutely perfect day, 33°C with no wind and just wispy cirrus stratus clouds, we headed down river away from the city to our picnic destination.
Here's Aussie Jock about to savour the first of the day with excellent 70's hits emitting from the superb built in multi speaker audio system onboard.
and here's the Master of the vessel, Captain Bean, at the helm paying full attention to the job in hand drinking responsibly of course :)
I think I must've been steering at this time!
Now Jen's steering and that's Garry's wife, Di, on the right nervously chewing her finger nails ... who wouldn't be knowing Jen's driving skills!
Here we are moored at our picnic destination.
and believe me that this was not a setup looking like Garry is about to draw an arrow from his quiver. That just happens to be some weird arty farty statue stuck in the middle of this park for no apparent reason.
and a fabulous day it was with good food, copious liquid refreshment and the best company one could wish for.

Here are a few pics from the recent Oriana reunion at the Prospect of Whitby pub in London. Everybody had a great time and meeting again with long forgotten friends was a treat. Geoff Kimber only arrived towards closing time as he had managed to leave his wallet in the taxi so he wouldn't have to buy a round of drinks. The Oakes was there with his little acorns. Dave is taking on the proportions of a cement mixer and he really is a barrel of laughs now.

Steve Borrill writes;
I just had it explained to me by Mark Sawyer on our Swan River picnic reunion only two days before this one how Mick Everson got the nickname "slava". I always thought it was "slaver" as I thought he was always a hard worker but it appears it's derived from "slather" as Geordie John reckoned that Mick was always slathering over all the good looking girls. You do learn something every day!
Mark Sawyer writes;

Chris Benham and his wife Sue visited the East Coast to attend a wedding in Brisbane. After the wedding they ventured south, arriving in Sydney last week. Luckily Lynne and I were able to host them at our "Little Shack by The Sea" last Wed 18th May for a late BBQ lunch and drinks of course. Also in attendance were John "Sully" Sullivan and his wife Sharon, Kevin "Morg" Morgan and Gareth Jones. This was an occasion to unfurl the P&O House flag. This was the flag's first social airing but I'm sure it will be unfurled on many future occasions...

...Lynne and I were also able to have dinner with Chris and Sue and their son Angus and his wife Tamara the next evening at "The Ivanhoe Hotel" in the Corso in Manly where they do a very creditable steak meal for $10. Chris' son Angus is an extremely talented photographer and specialises in coastal scenery, his website is www.Gusha.com.au and I would urge all seadogs to have a look at his work and maybe they might find something that would be acceptable to hang on a wall in their homes. Angus can also produce photos supplied to him, framed and on canvas ready to hang as commissions.
