We then took a drive to Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire for a day out. Check out the priceless re-enactment of a notable scene from Monty Python's Holy Grail.

There's an explanation required here. I was on local leave in Perth when the Big O came into Fremantle so I thought it'd be a good idea to hire a light aircraft and fly low over the ship as she left port at 18:00 hrs. Due to licence restrictions we had to be back in Jandakot by sundown i.e. around 19:30 hrs. Anyway, to cut a long story short, she was late leaving and I was told later that it was because Toby Tompkins, who was doing the 4th's Bunkering duties that day, had put too much oil in the starboard tanks listing the ship against the quay trapping the gangways so they were madly trying to re-ballast so they could get the ship away from the side. Anyway I'd also arranged for a group of the lads to be out on deck so I could film them. I should also point out here that over land we have to stay above 1000 feet but at sea we could have come down to 500 feet but we never got that chance. What you see on the aft deck is a message to me from the lads as they were very hungry and wanted to go to Dinner. Thanks boys!

This is when the ship arrived back into Fremantle where me and TT were to rejoin. TT had taken leave in the Eastern States but flew to Perth a week early and stayed with Jen & I waiting for the ship to turn up hence the reason we were unhappy was that our leave was over.

Med Fleet 1975

Explanation, We tied up alongside part of the US Mediterranean Fleet in Palma I think and we asked Bruce Waller what would be our chances of getting on one of the ships to have a look around. He simply said put on your best whites and cap and go and ask, so we did. We were piped aboard as we walked up the gang plank which blew me away and was saluted by the Master at Arms at the top. Dirty Harry saluted back with his left hand if I remember right! Anyway, they called a Lieutenant Engineer who said he would be delighted to show us around but they were on a 5 minute standby which meant they had to be away from the quay and doing full ahead within 5 minutes and if they had to go we'd be going with them so we took the risk and went for a brilliant tour.
